United Way Monterey County

Mission

Engage the community and focus resources to improve lives in Monterey County.

The Big Idea

In Monterey County, only 23% of residents have access to licensed childcare, with most early care provided by family, friends, and neighbors. It is well established that the return on investment in early childhood education results in grade level reading, higher graduation rates, and better economic and health outcomes. The FFN program, initiated by United Way Monterey County (UWMC) in partnership with the Bright Beginnings Early Childhood Development Initiative, focuses on supporting and building the capacity of these community caregivers. Predominantly serving the Latinx community, the program equips FFNs often community elders or parents with essential child development knowledge, tools, and strategies. Since 2017, UWMC has collaborated with local cities, community benefit organizations, to enhance the quality of early care and education. UWMC supports approximately 115 FFNs through a partnership with Door to Hope, providing comprehensive case management and resources to ensure safer and more nurturing learning environments for children.

Maria, is a grandma who is new to the FFN program who began to participate in September. Maria dedicates her time in caring for her school age granddaughter and her grandson Jayden, whom she attends FFN playgroups with. Initially, Maria was concerned as she shared Jayden never demonstrates interest in activities which consist of learning numbers or letters. When asking Maria what she has learned from the program, her response was: Learning the importance of following Jayden’s lead in his choice of activities. Maria s is grateful for the support of the FFN program, as workshops of this matter, are useful for her in learning how to expand her communication skills.
